California Lutheran University, also referred to as simply CLU or Cal Lutheran, is a university of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America located in Thousand Oaks, commonly referred to as `T.O.` by its residents, which is a city in the US state California, in southeastern Ventura County, named after the many oak trees that grace the area.
Cal Lutheran was established in 1959, being founded as California Lutheran College, its current name being adopted in 1986. It lies on a 225-acre campus that occupies a gently sloping hillside amid the rolling hills of Southern California. It presently offers its students 36 academic majors and 31 minors, and students are allowed to double-major if they have the time.
CLU's athletic teams are known as the Kingsmen (men) and Regals (women), and they compete in NCAA Division III, in 9 women's sports and 10 men's sports, among which there are: baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, volleyball and water polo. Their distinctive colors are violet and gold.
Among Cal Lutheran's noteworthy alumni, there are: Hank Bauer - retired special teams player San Diego Chargers, Jason Hirsh - Major League Baseball pitcher, Jacquelynne Fontaine - Miss California 2006 and Rod Marinelli - former Head Coach of the Detroit Lions.
